Allen's Boots

Allen’s Boots ~ check it out for some awesomely authentic Texas boots

Happy Monday!!  Well, I fell a little behind the last week or so ~ but for good reason.  My parents are moving out of the house I grew up in ~ so for the past few days I was at the house, going through all of my childhood artwork, high school notes written to and from friends and college papers.  Apparently, I am a borderline hoarder because I never threw anything away. I threw away a ton of stuff and still came back to Atlanta with 2 carloads. . . .oops.  But I’m back today with some favorite links from the past week and some pictures from our recent trip to Austin, Texas.

Why Austin you might ask? My husband went to college at the University of Texas and we met two other couples there for the weekend for a little reunion of sorts. But I would suggest to you that even if you have no connection there, it is an awesome place to visit.  While I’m told that it has changed a lot, as evidenced by the increasing amount of chain stores and restaurants appearing downtown, it still seems to have that “Keep Austin Weird” vibe that it is known for.  (For example, see my picture below of a random man on a horse in the middle of the street).

Austin is pretty much a foodie’s dream ~ with food trucks for any imaginable cuisine as well as an innovative restaurant scene. And if you are particularly into local/organic and all that jazz, you will find no shortage of that in Austin. As Whole Foods was founded there, it seems to be kind of like the motherland of that movement (other than California of course). The live music scene there is also fun and there are a ton of really cool and weird local shops to check out.  On Saturday, the brunch scene was in full swing.  Even in the late afternoon, people were sipping on bloody marys and just easing into the day.  Definitely my kind of laid back town ~ no one is ever in a rush.  As always, I wish I had taken more pictures, but I hope you enjoy the ones I walked away with below after my weekly links.

And. . . .here are some links I’ve been loving this week:

  1. First of all I would like to say wonderful blog! I had a quick question in which I’d like to
ask if you don’t mind. I was curious to know how you center yourself and clear your head before writing.
I’ve had difficulty clearing my mind in getting my ideas out.

I do enjoy writing but it just seems like the first
10 to 15 minutes tend to be wasted simply just trying to figure out
how to begin. Any suggestions or tips? Cheers!

    • Hi Beth – Thank you so much for your super sweet comment! I’ve been giving this some thought to see if I have any advice to offer in terms of how I get focused before writing. I’m certainly no expert but I’m happy to offer a few tips that seem to help me. First, I try to give myself some space to think creatively. I try to just let it flow for a few minutes and see what comes out. My advice would be not to edit yourself right away. Just start writing. Then maybe step away from it for an hour or so and come back and edit it. It is ok if you say the same thing a few different ways initially – when you edit, you’ll figure out what sounds best. My second piece of advice would be that if you sit down and nothing seems to be coming to you – change up your physical space. Try to sit in a different room or sit somewhere that you have some light. Then, if it really isn’t coming to you, take a breather. Take a walk and get outside. Finally, someone once told me to read everything possible that is written in the same style that I aspire to write in or in the same genre that I aspire to write in. So, I find that reading as much as possible helps me too. I hope this helps you! Feel free to write me with any other questions. Have a great day!
