When I think of the Academy Awards, I think of old-Hollywood glamour. Even though black and white cookies are considered a traditional “New York” dessert, to me, they also represent a throw back to the classics ~ perhaps even an “old-school” dessert. Celebrating the Oscars is all about putting yourself back in time, maybe back to when things were filmed in black and white, and when movie stars were seen as dazzling and enchanting people, as opposed to fodder for gossip magazines. So it seems like black and white cookies are just the right touch for an Oscar-themed party.
Black and whites are somewhere between a cake and a cookie ~ the soft, yellow cookie base is fluffy like a cake but also slightly crispy on the outside like a cookie. Paired with the glaze, it is slightly sweet but not overwhelmingly so. I used this recipe from Food52 ~ it is such a fabulous resource for accessible recipes. Before you say, woah, there is no way I can do that ~ I assure you that if I can do it, so can you. The trick is not to worry too much about imperfections. Are my cookies perfectly round and my icing perfectly even? No ~ but anyone can pick up perfectly polished cookies from a bakery. When something is homemade, it feels special, if it isn’t perfect.
A few other award-worthy dessert recipes that might be great for an Oscar party:
Espresso Brownies ~ coffee + chocolate = yum.
Keep it old-school with a chocolate cookie icebox cake.
Chocolate-dipped strawberries. Fruit makes it a healthy dessert, right?
Red-velvet cookies with white-chocolate cream frosting.
Chocolate-champagne truffles! Two of my favorite things merged into one!!
If any of your guests are gluten free, gluten free and dairy free chocolate olive oil cake. Wow!
A New York classic. . . Levain Bakery chocolate chip cookies.
A fun party favor might be some hot cocoa mix.
AND . . . don’t forget the champagne.
I hope you’ll consider making these mini black and whites or some of these other desserts for your Oscar get together!
